Western Correctional Association
Thank you for visiting!
After more than 80 years of continuous service, the Western Correctional Association, WeCA, or “Western”, is ceasing operations.
Western was initially founded in 1936 to represent and serve 13 US states and one Canadian province: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and British Columbia
Since then, Western evolved to collaborate with state and federal criminal and juvenile justice agencies in the expansion and development of best practices in parole, probation, and correctional facility work.
During that same time, Western assisted state and provincial associations with programming, training, and membership efforts; and worked to promote, educate, and inform the public regarding correctional issues.
Recent innovations in information-sharing and communications technology have increased the impact of national correctional organizations, and the reach of individual state correctional organizations. In turn, the need for a specialized regional association has greatly diminished. In light of those changes, Western’s board has decided that the time has come to shutter the organization and encourage corrections professionals to support both their individual state organizations, as well as our excellent national organizations such as the American Correctional Association and the American Probation and Parole Association.
